Safety Education

1975  Work Experience Instructor,  Branciforte Junior High School, Santa Cruz, CA.  I taught bicycle mechanics and maintenance through Branciforte Bicycle Shop, and graded the student.  The program was authorized by Santa Cruz City Schools.  The classes were taught at Branciforte Bicycle Shop in Santa Cruz, CA.  Contact persons were Allan White, Counselor, Santa Cruz Adult School and Shirley Mooers, Principal. 

 

1976-1977 Work Experience Instructor, Harbor High School, Santa Cruz, CA. I made a vocational training course, I taught bicycle mechanics and maintenance to 5 students in the work experience program.  The program was authorized by Santa Cruz City Schools.  The classes were taught at Branciforte Bicycle Shop in Santa Cruz, CA.  The contact person was Allan White, Counselor, Santa Cruz Adult School. 

 

1982-1987 Lecturer and Instructor,     Foundry School, San Jose, CA.  (High School Level). I made a bicycle shop for the school, I taught bicycle safety, mechanics and maintenance, and led bicycle rides.  I taught several apprentices in bicycle workshop classes and work experience programs, and I taught bicycle accident prevention.  Contact persons: John Malloy, Steve Schimmen, Howard Baruner, Greg Ames, Scott Morris, Foundry School, 258 Sunol St., San Jose, CA.

 

1986-1987 Bicycle Safety Coordinator,  National Safety Council, Central Counties Safety Council, and The City of San Jose, San Jose, CA.  I developed and implemented bicycle safety programs for elementary, junior high, high school and college levels.  I performed bicycle safety lectures at school assemblies, workshop classes and bicycle rodeos. During this time my bicycle safety programs were presented to over two thousand students. I worked with the San Jose Police Department (Pedestrian Safety Unit) and the National Safety Council in putting together my program.  I taught Bicycle Safety Workshops at Agnews State Hospital in Santa Clara for the patients bike program. I lectured at San Jose City College regarding bicycle safety, operation of bicycles on the highway and bicycle maintenance.  I lectured at the San Jose Job Corps (Driver Education Program) regarding bicycle safety, and accident prevention involving bicycists.  As part of the above mention work I performed in San Jose, the following is a list of the assemblies and bicycle rodeos:

 

The assemblies involved a lecture regarding safe operation of a bicycle on the highway and the Rules of The Road, showing bicycle safety movies and handing out bicycle safety literature.  The bicycle rodeos involved actually inspecting all the bicycle which were brought to the schools, a mechanic workshop class to make sure the bikes were safe, obtaining permission slips from parents, and conducting a rider’s performance course with cones, regarding turning and stopping abilities of the students.
